Lee County used a pair of late scores to pull away from Union Pines 35-24 in a Cape Fear Valley 3A matchup Friday in Sanford.
After giving up 14 early points, Union Pines found first-half paydirt with a 32-yard field goal by Sam Parsons and a 97-yard pick six by Dakota Hicks. The host Yellow Jackets (7-2; 2-2) scored a third touchdown in the final minute to take a 21-10 lead at recess.
Viking quarterback Ben Bowbliss connected with Clayton Jessee for a 16-yard touchdown late in the third to trim the lead to four.
Lee County took advantage of a muffed Viking punt for a short-field score, then the Yellow Jackets recovered a pooch kick to set up their final score with under 3 minutes to play in the game.
Union Pines added a late score when Bowbliss completed an 15-yard pass to Wendell McDuffie.
Bowbliss completed 22 for 43 passes for 244 yards and he carried the ball 19 times for 53 yards.
Union Pines falls to 4-5 overall, 0-4 in league play. The Vikings visit Southern Lee next week.
