Final: Pinecrest 49 - Union Pines 6

The Pinecrest defense stole the show in the 23rd Battle of the Pines Friday with Union Pines.

Pinecrest held the Viking triple option offense to -10 yards rushing and allowed Union Pines just 90 yards of total offense in a 49-6 win in front a standing room only crowd in Cameron. The Patriots also snagged three interceptions including a 28-yard Zyheem Kelly pick six midway through the second quarter. Pinecrest (4-0) scored 35 second-quarter points on touchdown runs from Savion Kizer (1 yard), Ben Garbark (3 yards), Nick Boulanger (3 yards) and Anthony Martin (14 yards). The Patriots forced a running clock with a 6-yard Martin score with 8:51 to play in the third quarter.

Boulanger sprinted 65 yards to the end zone on the opening play of the game. He finished with a game-high 140 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Garbark was 2-for-4 passing for 71 yards and he carried the ball seven times for 37 yards. Pinecrest finished with 421 yards of total offense, and kicker Jeff Yurk was perfect on PATs.

Union Pines (2-2) found success just before halftime when quarterback Rory Board connected with Jacob Bowbliss for a 63-yard catch and run. Two plays later, Board broke through a scrum on the goal line for the touchdown. The point after was blocked.

Board was 10-for-25 passing for 100 yards and three INTs. He led the Viking ground game with 7 yards on 7 carries. Bowbliss had 7 catches for 100 receiving yards.

One facet of the game that will get the attention of the Patriot coaching staff was the penalties that stalled drives and negated several long runs. Pinecrest was flagged 14 times for 184 yards in the game. Union Pines was flagged twice for 10 yards.

Pinecrest now leads the overall series against Union Pines 19-4. Friday's win was special for the Patriot program as coach Chris Metzger celebrated his 100th on the field win at Pinecrest. In 13 seasons, Metzger is 100-53 overall, 34-34 in league play.

Pinecrest has an open week next week and will host 71st in the conference opener Sept. 27. Union Pines faces Albemarle next week. #goPinecrest #goUnionPines #MSRscores
