Final: Pinecrest 24 - G. Creek 21

Pinecrest survived four turnovers and relied heavily on its bend but don't break defense to escape Hope Mills with a 24-21 win over Gray's Creek Friday.

The Patriots held the Gray's Creek Wing-T offense to 131 rushing yards. Bears quarterback Ben Lovette was 10 of 21 passing for 102 yards, 2 touchdowns and one interception. He also had one rushing yard on six carries.

The Bears' Dalton Patrick turned a bad Pinecrest center-quarterback exchange into a 55-yard scoop and run for the game's final score on the opening second half drive.

Pinecrest's lightning and thunder running back duo of of Zaythan Hill and Corey Patterson shredded the Bear defense for 280 yards. Hill had 24 carries for 175 yards and 1 touchdown while Patterson quietly accumulated 105 yards on 16 carries.

Alexander Roberts found a host of Bear defenders in the backfield late in the first quarter on one if his two carries on the night. The senior changed direction and found a wall of blockers for 23-yard touchdown.

Place kicker Cameron Haiduven nailed a 31-yard field goal with 5:59 to play in the first half.

Quarterback Greg Van Steen executed a flawless 2-minute offense just before halftime finishing the drive with a 1-yard scamper for the third Patriot touchdown with 46 seconds left in the quarter. The senior completed 1 of 7 passes for 53 yards and one interception.

Pinecrest visits Durham Hillside next week. The Hornets (1-1) lost to Scotland 28-12 Friday
