Final: Hillside 8 - Pinecrest 0

DURHAM — Hillside took advantage of a Pinecrest turnover Friday converting a special teams miscue into the only score of the night.

A late third-quarter Hornet punt landed at the Pinecrest 28 yard line where bounced into the back of Patriot defender Grant Mabe who was locked up with a Hillside blocker and did not see the ball. The Hornets recovered at the 25, and three players later, Antonio Davis plowed into the endzone from 3 yards out. Donald Moore added the two-point conversion.

The game was a classic defensive battle. Pinecrest's Zaythan Hill lead all rushers with 115 yards on 19 carries. The Patriots had 177 rushing yards and yielded 201 to the Hornets (2-1).

Quarterback Greg Van Steen was 6 of 9 passing for 71 yards, and he had seven carries for 11 yards. Sophomore backup Ben Garback completed 2 of 4 passes for 7 yards and an interception. He had 4 carries for 22 yards.

Pinecrest was 2 of 4 on fourth down conversions and 0-9 on third downs. The Patriots also had three turnovers to the Hornets' one.

The game was interrupted 45 minutes in the first quarter because of lightning.

The Patriots face Providence next week in the home opener. The Panthers (1-2) lost to Myers Park 55-14 Friday.
